In Good to Great, Jim Collins talks about how great companies get the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats. This holds for life, too: You are the driver of your own life. Who do you want on your bus?
When building your A-Team—your Abundance Team—let your divine decide. As with the other decisions in your life, go back to your values and clearest intentions. You know best what matters to you. Refer to those core values and your inner wisdom to help you navigate the relationships and interactions you need in your life.
Use discernment, and carefully choose the people you can trust, supporters who have the capacity, the competency, the willingness, and the loving spirit to come through for you and for your vision. I’m not saying you have to completely reshape your current circle of friends, but when you focus on manifesting your divine wealth, you must identify those who can enhance your growth and help keep you moving forward in the Abundance Loop. Personal growth is a challenging enough process, and the more you feel supported along the way, the more fun and success you will have.
Choosing the Members of Your A-Team
Here are some questions to help you determine if someone belongs on your A-Team. Feel free to come up with your own criteria as well. But in general, when you approach someone for help, think about the following points:
- Does this person have an attitude of gratitude?
- Do I trust this person to really support my dream?
- Can I count on this person to be there for me when I need him or her?
- What do I respect about this person?
- Has this person given me sound advice in the past?
- Has this person stepped up for me in the past?
- Does this person have a collaborative spirit, or is it all about him or her?
- What core competencies does this person have?
- Does this person live in alignment with his or her own core values?
- Does this person respect my values?
Ultimately, you want to know that each person can step up and be there for you and not get in the way of your transformation. You want someone you can call on when the going gets tough, to help keep you accountable for the goals you set for yourself, or to call you on your “stuff” in a loving manner when you display ego-driven behaviors that are out of sync with your values and highest intentions.
It’s hard to see your own blind spots. You need other people in order to grow and keep you on the Abundance Loop journey. And you must be committed to do all these same things for others when they call on you. We are all in this together.
Here is an example of a chart you might construct to take an inventory of who is in your life and how they support you in various ways. It shows you who is, and who is not, on your side and also reveals any gaps that let you know it’s time to get out and meet someone new to help you. To do this, you might try some of the networking techniques mentioned in the upcoming pages. Please remember that there is no shame in seeking help. No one achieves success alone.
